The Tiffen 44CGN3H 4x4 CLR/ND.3 Grad HE Filter is a square graduated filter with a clear area and an ND.3 area, for compositions where brightness changes across the frame. Position the graduated section over the brighter part and the clear section over the darker part to reduce the difference at capture, rather than darkening the whole view. It suits landscape photographers, architecture work with a bright sky, and other carefully composed scenes with a fairly clear boundary between light and shade. The 4x4 format gives you room to align the transition with your composition, whether the horizon sits high or low in the frame. Its job is selective light control, not general darkening. A scene with a very uneven boundary between bright and dark areas can be harder to balance naturally with a graduated filter.
Specialist Note
A bright band of sky can make the land below it look dull by comparison; this filter gives you a way to address that difference in the frame itself. I’d use the ND.3 graduated area across the sky, keeping the clear part over the foreground, then adjust the filter’s position until the transition follows the horizon. The 4x4 format gives you useful room to place that boundary accurately, especially when the horizon isn’t centred. It’s suited to deliberate landscapes and similarly composed scenes, rather than quick-changing subjects. One limitation to keep in mind: a jagged skyline can make a graduated effect harder to blend convincingly.
