Tiffen 44CGSF1 4x4 CLR/Skyfire 1 Grad Filter
Tiffen 44CGSF1 4x4 CLR/Skyfire 1 Grad Filter | Add colour selectively to the sky
Tiffen 44CGSF1 4x4 CLR/Skyfire 1 Grad Filter is a 4x4 graduated filter with a clear-to-Skyfire treatment, for photographers and filmmakers who want to add colour to part of a scene rather than across the whole frame. Its natural role is a sky that feels flat beside a foreground with enough colour already: place the graduated area over the sky and the clear area over the land to keep the effect local. The “Grad” in the name matters; this is a selective colour treatment, not an all-over wash. It suits deliberate landscape and outdoor compositions, and anyone shaping a shot with a filter rather than making a global colour change later. Think of it as a creative colour choice, not a neutral correction filter. Its square 4x4 format makes it a considered option for a filter-based shooting setup. The effect is most useful when the sky is a clear part of the composition and you want to give it a distinct Skyfire character.
Specialist Note
Late in the day, a quiet sky can leave a landscape feeling a little subdued; that’s the sort of scene where this filter has a clear purpose. I’d align the graduated change with the sky-to-land boundary, then check the frame for colour spilling onto trees or buildings. The CLR/Skyfire treatment lets you keep the lower part of the image clear while giving the sky its own colour. Its 4x4 format gives you a square filter to position as you compose, which is useful when the horizon doesn’t sit in the same place in every frame. This suits photographers after a deliberate, in-camera colour effect. One caveat: if you want the sky to stay strictly neutral, Skyfire is the wrong look.
