Tiffen 44PM18 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter
Tiffen 44PM18 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter | Gentle glow around highlights
The Tiffen 44PM18 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter combines a square 4x4 format with a subtle diffusion grade. It’s for filmmakers and photographers who want bright highlights to bloom gently and contrast to feel a little softer, without making the whole image look heavily diffused. Think of practical lights in a night scene, reflections in a shop window, or a portrait with a bright background: the Pro-Mist look can take the edge off those bright areas and give them a soft halo. The 1/8 strength keeps that effect restrained, so it’s a considered look rather than an overt filter effect. It’s best suited to scenes where you can see the light sources or strong highlights and want to shape their appearance in-camera. The 4x4 format is intended for square-filter setups, so it’s worth matching it to the filter system you already use.
Specialist Note
At dusk, a streetlamp catches the mist above a quiet pavement; that’s the sort of highlight this filter can soften into a gentle glow. I’d consider the 1/8 grade when you want that Pro-Mist character to stay subtle, especially for night portraits or a scene lit by practical lamps. The 4x4 format means it’s a square filter for a setup designed around that format, rather than a filter you simply screw onto a lens. One honest point: the effect depends on bright areas in the scene, so it won’t create a halo where there’s no highlight to work with. If that restrained look is what you’re after, this is a thoughtful grade to start with.
