Tiffen 6666BLUESTREAK3 6.6x6.6 Blue Streak 3mm Filter
Tiffen 6666BLUESTREAK3 6.6x6.6 Blue Streak 3mm Filter | Add blue streaks from light sources
The defining feature of this Tiffen filter is its Blue Streak effect: it’s for adding a blue line to bright points of light, rather than simply protecting a lens. It suits filmmakers and photographers who want to shape how lights appear in the frame, especially in night scenes, music videos or stylised portraits. Use it when a visible light source can contribute to the composition; a streetlight or stage lamp, for example, gives the effect something to work with. The 6.6 x 6.6 format is made for a square-filter workflow, so it’s best considered alongside the filter setup you already use. This is a creative-effect filter, not a general-purpose UV filter: its appeal is the deliberate streak it can add, and it’s most useful when that look is part of the image you’re planning.
Working with the effect
Keep a bright point light in the frame and compose with the streak in mind, rather than treating it as an effect to add at random. A lamp near the edge of the composition can draw the eye across the image; several lights may make the frame feel busier. The result depends on the scene and how you frame it, so start with one clear light source and adjust your composition before adding more. In flat daylight, with no bright point source to work from, the filter has less to contribute.
Specialist Note
First-time owners of streak filters can expect the filter to make a strong mark in every scene; the key is giving it a bright point light to work from. This 6.6 x 6.6 square format suits people already working with square filters, and makes it easier to treat the effect as part of a deliberate setup. I’d use it for a night street scene or a stage shot: keep a lamp or spotlight in frame, then compose so the blue streak has room to lead the eye. The 3mm designation is part of the product name, but I wouldn’t read it as a filter-thickness specification. It’s a specialised look, so it pairs best with scenes built around visible lights.
