Tokina 127mm Pro IRND 2.4
Tokina 127mm Pro IRND 2.4 | Eight stops of light control
The 127mm format and 2.4 rating make this Tokina Pro IRND a substantial light-control filter for work where exposure needs to be managed deliberately. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture in bright conditions, while the IRND designation makes infrared-aware filtration part of its purpose. At a density of 2.4, it reduces light by eight stops, giving you room to shape motion or depth of field without changing the scene’s lighting. That’s especially useful for long exposures in daylight and for maintaining a chosen shutter speed when filming outdoors. The larger 127mm format is aimed at setups that take filters of this size, rather than everyday small-filter use. It’s a focused tool: useful when strong filtration is called for, but too dense to leave in place when you simply want a modest exposure adjustment.
Specialist Note
A 2.4 density means an eight-stop reduction in standard ND notation; in practice, 1/250 sec becomes about 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful starting point for smoothing moving water or clouds in daylight, provided the scene stays still apart from the movement you want to blur. The 127mm format points to a larger filter setup, so I’d choose it when your rig is already built around that size, not as a casual addition to a compact kit. For outdoor video, it can also help retain a slower shutter in bright light. One practical caveat: eight stops is a strong cut, so plan the exposure before fitting it rather than expecting a small tweak.
