Tokina 4x4 Pro IRND 2.4
Tokina 4x4 Pro IRND 2.4 | Strong light reduction with IR control
The Tokina 4x4 Pro IRND 2.4 combines a strong neutral-density rating with an infrared designation, making it a specialist filter for controlled exposure in bright conditions. It suits filmmakers and other image-makers working with a 4x4 filter setup who need to reduce incoming light without changing their chosen aperture or shutter setting. A density of 2.4 is approximately eight stops of light reduction, a substantial cut that can help preserve a wide aperture outdoors or support long exposures in daylight. The IRND designation indicates that the filter is intended to manage infrared as well as visible light. That makes it a considered option when infrared behaviour matters to your image, rather than simply reaching for a strong ND filter. Its fixed density is useful when you know the reduction you need; it’s less flexible if light levels are changing quickly.
Choosing the right exposure
Think of this as a filter for a planned exposure, not a small, on-the-fly adjustment. An approximately eight-stop reduction gives you room to use a slower shutter or wider aperture in bright surroundings, but you’ll want to settle your exposure around that fixed amount. For a long-exposure still, for instance, the reduction can help turn a fast daylight shutter into a multi-second exposure. In a moving-image workflow, it can help retain your intended shutter setting while managing excess light.
Specialist Note
The Tokina 4x4 Pro IRND 2.4 is best at making a major exposure cut while addressing infrared. I’d point it out to a filmmaker already working with a 4x4 filter holder, especially for bright-day scenes where you want to keep your chosen shutter and aperture. Its 2.4 density is roughly eight stops: for a static daylight scene, that can take a 1/125-second exposure to around two seconds, assuming the light stays the same. The 4x4 format also gives you a clear format requirement to match to your filter setup. My honest caution: that’s a strong, fixed reduction, so it’s not the one I’d reach for when you need small, frequent exposure changes.
