Tokina Cinema 105mm T1.5 (EF)
Tokina Cinema 105mm T1.5 (EF) | A fast prime for controlled close-ups
The Tokina Cinema 105mm T1.5 (EF) is a short-telephoto cinema prime for filmmakers who can plan their framing and want a tighter view of the action. Its 105mm focal length suits dialogue close-ups, portraits and detail shots, keeping the camera farther from the subject than a wider view would. That can be helpful when you want a composed, intimate shot without placing the camera right beside your performer. It’s an interchangeable lens with a Canon EF mount, intended for video and filmmaking. The fixed focal length is also a practical constraint: to widen the composition, you’ll need to reposition the camera or change lenses. This prime makes most sense on a set where the shot can be blocked deliberately, rather than in situations that call for frequent reframing from one position.
Specialist Note
A common first-time mistake with a 105mm prime is expecting to reframe quickly without moving the camera; I’d plan the camera position before the scene starts. The manual focus is a good fit for deliberate focus pulls: mark the start and end points, then rehearse the move with your performer. At T1.5, you have more room to work in limited light, though focus demands care when your subject is close. For a dialogue close-up, keep the camera back and make a measured pull between two planned marks; for a detail insert, settle the framing and focus before the action. On a Canon APS-C (EF-S) body, the view is equivalent to 168mm, so leave extra working distance. It suits controlled setups, not quick changes of viewpoint.
