Urth 72mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Soften bright highlights

A face framed by a bright window, or a portrait with small lights behind it, is where a Black Mist filter can earn its place. The Urth 72mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ is designed to soften the look of bright highlights and give them a gentle glow in the image, rather than leaving every bright point looking crisp. That makes it worth considering for portraits, evening scenes and video where you want a softer, more atmospheric rendering straight from the camera. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want to shape the mood while shooting, without relying on editing to create that look afterwards. Keep in mind that the effect depends on the scene: bright points of light give it something to work on, while even, flat lighting may show less of its character. The name identifies a 72mm magnetic filter, but doesn’t specify which lenses or magnetic accessories it fits.

Specialist Note

For softening bright highlights in-camera, this filter is a more direct route than trying to recreate that look in editing. The 72mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching 72mm filter thread; it’s a detail worth checking against the lens you plan to use. Its magnetic attachment is handy when you want to put the effect on for a scene and take it off again without threading a filter on and off. I’d consider it for a portrait with a bright window behind the subject, or for evening street scenes with lights in the frame. Those bright areas are where the Black Mist character has most to work with. In a softly lit, low-contrast scene, the effect may be subtle.
