Viltrox AF 14mm f/4.0 Nikon Z
Viltrox AF 14mm f/4.0 Nikon Z | Bring more of the scene into view
Wide landscapes and imposing buildings can fit into your composition without having to keep stepping farther back. The Viltrox AF 14mm f/4.0 Nikon Z is an ultra-wide prime for Nikon Z photographers who want a broad view with autofocus. Its 14mm focal length gives you room to include a sweeping stretch of scenery or more of a building’s facade in one frame. That makes it especially suited to landscape and architecture photography, where choosing what to include around your main subject is part of the picture. Autofocus helps when you want to work quickly between compositions, while the fixed focal length keeps your framing choices deliberate: move your position and decide what belongs at the edges. It’s a specialised lens for expansive scenes, rather than an all-purpose option for every kind of photography.
Specialist Note
People new to ultra-wide framing often tilt the camera up to fit a building, then find its vertical lines look as if they’re leaning. With this lens, start by keeping the camera level; you’ll get a more composed-looking facade while still including plenty of the scene. For a landscape, pay attention to what sits at the frame’s edges, as well as the distant view. The f/4 maximum aperture suits considered work in good light, but it won’t gather as much light as a faster lens when the day gets dim; a tripod can help for longer exposures. On a Nikon Z DX body, the framing corresponds to 21mm full-frame equivalent. I’d recommend it to Nikon Z photographers who regularly shoot landscapes or buildings.
