Viltrox AF 9mm f/2.8 Nikon Z APS-C | Take in more of the scene

Instead of stitching several frames to fit a broad view into one picture, you can capture a wide scene in a single shot with this Viltrox ultra-wide prime. It’s an autofocus lens for Nikon Z APS-C cameras, suited to photographers who want more of the surroundings in frame without stepping far back. Landscapes are a natural use: bring a foreground detail into the composition and let the wider view carry the setting behind it. In architecture, it can help include more of a building or interior when your position is limited. It also suits night-sky photography, where a wide composition can include both the sky and the land beneath it. The 115° angle of view gives you room to build expansive compositions, though careful framing matters: very wide views can make nearby elements dominate. If you enjoy working with foreground and distance together, this lens gives you a direct way to do it.

Specialist Note

The 9mm view asks you to pay attention to what’s close to the camera; a foreground object can quickly take over the frame. That’s also why I’d recommend it to someone who likes composing deliberately, rather than simply pointing at a distant scene. On a Nikon DX body, 9mm gives a field of view comparable to about 13.5mm on full frame. For stars, f/2.8 gives you a practical starting point: try a 10-second exposure and ISO 1600, then adjust for the sky and your conditions. It also makes sense for architecture when backing up isn’t an option. If you prefer a natural, less expansive view, pair it with a more standard focal length.
