Yongnuo Speedlite YN686EX RT Flash Canon | Extra light for events and portraits

Without a flash, an indoor event or portrait has to rely on the room’s existing light, while bright sun can leave faces looking harsh. The Yongnuo Speedlite YN686EX RT is a speedlight flash for Canon photographers who want an additional light source for those situations. It’s suited to event photography, indoor portraits and fill light in strong sunlight—three jobs where a flash can help balance the light on your subject. The appeal is its focused role: keep it in mind when ambient light alone isn’t giving you the look you want, or when the sun is too strong on a face. For a photographer covering gatherings or making portraits indoors, it offers a dedicated flash option rather than relying only on the available light. It can also serve as fill light outdoors in harsh sun.

Specialist Note

For a one-light indoor portrait, I’d consider the YN686EX RT when the room light isn’t giving the face enough presence. It’s a speedlight, so the point is to add flash to the scene; I’d use that role deliberately rather than expect it to solve every lighting problem on its own. At an event, it gives a Canon photographer a flash option to bring along, and in harsh sunlight it can provide fill on a subject. That makes its uses nicely clear. If your main need is ambient-light photography, this isn’t the tool for that; it’s for times when adding flash is part of the picture.
