Zoom L-12 LiveTrak: Mix, record and monitor live shows

Running a live mix, recording every part and sorting out separate musician monitoring can mean bringing several pieces of gear. The Zoom L-12 LiveTrak is a 12-channel digital mixer that brings those jobs together, with multitrack recording to an SD card and five independent headphone mixes. For a band playing live, it records the performance while you mix, so you can later revisit individual parts rather than being limited to the stereo mix. It also works for rehearsal: each player can have a tailored headphone balance, while backing tracks or a click from a computer can join the live mix. For a project that needs more work after the session, record in WAV at up to 24-bit/96 kHz and move the tracks to a DAW for editing and mixing. The L-12 records up to 14 tracks simultaneously and plays back up to 12. At 96 kHz, some functions—including effects, EQ, overdubbing and the audio-interface mode—aren’t available, so that higher rate is best reserved for sessions where those features aren’t needed. For bands and small production setups that need a mixer and recorder in one unit, that’s a useful distinction to know up front.

The SD card slot supports SD, SDHC and SDXC cards up to 512 GB. Automatic recording start and stop can take care of transport control during a session, while project protection helps guard saved work against accidental changes. Projects can also be imported or exported over USB 2.0, which is useful when moving sessions between the recorder and a computer.
