Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 Nikon Z

Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 Nikon Z: Create beautifully separated portraits

A standard zoom makes you adjust framing across its range; the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 Nikon Z gives you a fixed view and a bright maximum aperture for portrait work. This Nikon Z autofocus prime has a 56mm focal length, making it a straightforward option for head-and-shoulders portraits and individual subjects. At f/1.7, it also gives you the option of a shallow depth of field that draws attention to your subject against a softer background. The same focal length can suit considered landscape compositions and architectural details when you want to frame a smaller part of the scene rather than capture everything around you. Autofocus makes it practical for everyday portrait sessions, while the bright aperture is useful when you want to work with available light. Its relatively simple purpose is part of the appeal: one focal length, a generous maximum aperture and autofocus, without the bulk or range of a zoom lens. For Nikon Z photographers who mainly make portraits, or who want a compact prime to add to a kit, this Viltrox keeps the key decisions clear: compose at 56mm, then use the aperture to shape how much of the scene stays in focus.

Optics and handling

• Optical construction: The lens uses 11 elements arranged in 9 groups, including 4 ED elements and 3 high-refractive-index elements. These specialised elements form part of the design that manages light as it passes through the lens.
• Nine-blade aperture: The diaphragm has 9 blades, a detail that contributes to the shape of out-of-focus highlights. It gives portrait backgrounds a rounded appearance when those highlights fall outside the focus plane.
• STM autofocus motor: A stepping motor drives autofocus with quiet operation. That’s welcome when focusing during video recording or in a quiet portrait setting, where a noisy focus drive could draw attention.
• Close focusing: The minimum focus distance is about 0.55m, measured from the camera’s sensor plane. That lets you move in for tighter portraits or smaller details without changing lenses.
• Maximum magnification: At 0.11x magnification, this is a portrait-focused prime rather than a close-up lens. It still frames small details, but it’s best chosen for people and broader subject views.
• 52mm filter thread: The front accepts filters with a 52mm diameter. Check the size printed on any filter you plan to use, so it matches the lens’s thread.
• Compact dimensions: The lens measures 65 × 54.7mm. Its short profile keeps the setup compact on a Nikon Z camera, and the supplied hood helps shade the front element from stray light.

On your camera

This version has a Nikon Z mount and autofocus, and it fits Nikon Z-mount cameras. On a Nikon DX (APS-C) body, the 56mm focal length gives a field of view equivalent to 84mm on full frame, which makes the framing particularly suited to portraits. That tighter angle of view is worth keeping in mind when choosing a shooting position, especially indoors or when working with groups.
