7Artisans 77mm True Colour CPL Filter
7Artisans 77mm True Colour CPL Filter | Control reflections and sky contrast
The defining choice is the 77mm size: it gives this circular polarising filter a clear fit for lenses with a matching 77mm filter thread. 7Artisans calls it True Colour, and the CPL format is for photographers who want to manage reflected light while shooting. Rotate the filter as you frame to change its effect: it can reduce glare from water or glass, and deepen a blue sky when the sun is at a suitable angle. That makes it useful for landscapes, travel scenes and outdoor details where reflections hide colour or texture. The effect depends on the light and your shooting angle, so a polariser won’t remove every reflection in every scene. It’s best used with a view of the result as you adjust, rather than treated as a filter to leave in place for every shot.
Using the filter
For water or a shop window, adjust the polarising effect while watching the reflection in your frame; stop when you can see more of the detail behind it. For a blue sky, the effect is generally strongest when you’re pointing about 90 degrees from the sun. Check across the whole frame, especially with a wide view, since polarisation can look uneven across a large area of sky. If the light or angle changes, readjust rather than assuming the setting will still suit the scene.
Specialist Note
Landscape and travel photographers who often frame water, windows or open skies are the people I’d point toward this 77mm CPL. The size matters when choosing it: your lens needs a matching 77mm filter thread, so it’s a lens fit to check, not a camera-body feature. For reflections on a lake, turn the filter while composing and watch for the water’s surface glare to ease; for sky, try a direction roughly 90 degrees from the sun. That’s where a polariser can have a stronger effect. I’d remove it when you want the reflection itself, or when the sky looks patchy across the frame.
