AstrHori AH-M1 Light Meter Silver: Read exposure on film cameras

Film cameras without a built-in meter leave you judging exposure from experience or reaching for a separate meter. The AstrHori AH-M1 Light Meter Silver brings a 30-degree measuring angle and a built-in OLED display to a compact accessory made for analogue cameras. Its silver aluminium-alloy body measures 38 × 26 × 14 mm, keeping its footprint small alongside your camera. The 0.66-inch screen presents the readings on the meter itself, and its 47 g weight adds very little to a camera bag or setup. The AH-M1 offers both aperture-priority and shutter-priority operation, so you can work around the setting that matters most for the photograph. Continuous and spot metering give you two ways to take a reading: use the broader continuous option as lighting changes, or choose spot metering for a more defined area. Exposure compensation is available too. That combination is useful across different kinds of film work, from checking a reading in shifting light to taking a more selective measurement for a carefully composed subject. It's a small accessory, and its screen is small as well; the appeal is having a dedicated meter and its controls in a compact unit.

Highlights

  • Continuous and spot metering: Choose between the two measurement modes according to the reading you need. Having both options in one meter means you can take either a continuous or a more selective spot reading.
  • 30-degree field of view: The AH-M1 measures across a defined angle, approximately equivalent to the view of a 50mm lens. That gives you a more specific area to meter than a very wide scene-wide reading.
  • Shutter speeds from 32 seconds to 1/8000 second: The meter covers a broad range of shutter-speed settings, including long exposures and fast speeds. This range makes it possible to work with the shutter values supported by the meter.
  • ISO settings from 5 to 6400: Set the meter across this range of film speeds to match the film you’re using. The available values span low and high ISO settings.
  • Aperture and shutter priority: Select aperture-priority or shutter-priority operation, depending on which exposure setting you want to keep central. Three stops of exposure compensation are also available for adjusting the reading.
  • Silver aluminium-alloy body: The metal construction gives the compact meter its silver finish. At 47 g, it’s a light piece of equipment to carry with a film camera.
  • Compact dimensions: At 38 × 26 × 14 mm, the AH-M1 has a small footprint beside your camera. Its built-in screen and controls are part of the same compact unit.

Good to know

The meter has an internal 120 mAh lithium battery, with an approximate continuous metering runtime of 12 hours. Recharge it through the USB Type-C port using a 5V power supply. The supplied USB-C cable is included for charging. Battery life and charging details are worth factoring in if you plan to use the meter through a long stretch of shooting.
