B+W 103 MRC ND Gray 77
B+W 103 MRC ND Gray 77 | Control light for longer exposures
Bright conditions can make it hard to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without overexposing the image. The B+W 103 MRC ND Gray 77 is a neutral-density filter: it reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to choose those settings. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a scene, such as softening the appearance of flowing water, or who want to work with a wider aperture in bright light. The result depends on the scene and the exposure you choose, so take a test frame and adjust from there. This filter is identified as a 77 model, which is useful when matching it to a lens with a 77 mm filter thread. If your aim is a specific shutter speed, plan to check exposure as you work rather than rely on a fixed setting.
Getting the exposure you want
For a sense of motion, choose the slower shutter speed that suits your subject, then check the exposure and adjust as needed. With moving water, that can soften the visible flow; with other moving subjects, the effect will depend on how quickly they move and how long the shutter stays open. If you’re using the filter to work at a wider aperture in bright conditions, keep that aperture and review the exposure after fitting the filter. A few test frames are a straightforward way to judge the result in the light you have.
Specialist Note
I’d be careful about choosing this filter based on a particular shutter-speed change alone; the title doesn’t give enough to promise one. Still, the 77 designation is a handy buying cue: match it to a lens marked with a 77 mm filter thread. The 103 marking identifies this specific B+W ND Gray model, so keep the exact product name to hand when you’re comparing filters. I’d suggest it to someone who wants to explore longer exposures or use a wider aperture in bright light. For flowing water, set the shutter slower, make a test exposure, then adjust until the movement looks right to you.
