Caruba L-Plaat MPU100
Caruba L-Plaat MPU100 | A steadier route to portrait framing on a tripod
Without an L-plate, changing from landscape to portrait orientation on a tripod usually means tilting the camera head sideways. The Caruba L-Plaat MPU100 is a tripod accessory for photographers who want a more direct way to make that change while keeping the camera supported by the tripod. It’s most relevant when you move between horizontal and vertical compositions during a session, such as when framing a landscape and then a portrait. The L-plate format is intended to give you a mounting position for each orientation, rather than relying on a sideways tilt. That can make tripod work feel more straightforward when keeping your framing level matters. It’s a focused piece of support gear, not an accessory that changes exposure or image quality; its value is in how you position the camera. If your camera spends little time on a tripod, you may rarely need it. For regular tripod use with changing orientations, it addresses a specific, familiar bit of setup friction.
Specialist Note
An L-plate won’t improve a photograph by itself; it earns its place by making tripod positioning less of a compromise. I’d point it out to someone who often switches between landscape and portrait framing and would rather not tilt the whole camera head to do it. The “L-Plaat” name tells you the key idea: it’s shaped around that change of orientation, while its category as a tripod accessory makes clear that it’s part of your support setup, not an imaging upgrade. For a portrait, you can compose vertically on the tripod instead of relying on a sideways tilt. If you only use a tripod occasionally, this is a quite specific accessory; regular tripod users are more likely to appreciate its purpose.
