Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) ND Heg 1.2 (4st) | Balance bright skies by four stops

Without a graduated filter, a bright sky can force you to choose between holding detail in the clouds and keeping the land properly exposed. This Formatt Hitech hard-edge graduated ND filter is made to reduce that difference in-camera, especially when the horizon is clear and fairly level. It suits landscape photographers working with open coastlines, flat fields or distant mountain ridges, where a defined transition can sit along the horizon without crossing prominent objects. The 165 x 200mm format gives you room to position that transition carefully within the frame. Place the darker part over the bright sky and keep the clear part over the foreground; that lets you make a more balanced exposure in one frame rather than relying on a later blend. The hard edge is less forgiving when the horizon is uneven, so it’s best suited to scenes with a distinct boundary.

Specialist Note

Four stops is a strong reduction, so this filter can darken more of the scene than you need when the sky and land are already close in brightness. It earns its place when that gap is obvious: the 1.2 strength cuts the bright area by four stops, giving you meaningful control at a bright, clean horizon. The 165 x 200mm size is useful when you need to position the transition precisely rather than accept a fixed split in the frame. I’d consider it for seascapes or open farmland; line the hard transition up with the horizon and keep it away from trees or buildings, where its edge can be conspicuous.
