Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) NDSEG 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) NDSEG 0.3 (1 Stop) | Tame bright skies by one stop
Without a graduated filter, a bright sky can push you into choosing between retaining detail above and getting the foreground exposure you want. The Formatt Hitech NDSEG 0.3 is a neutral density filter with a soft graduated transition, made to reduce light gradually across part of the scene. That makes it useful when you’re photographing a landscape with a brighter sky and want to keep more balanced detail in the image. It suits photographers who want to manage that difference while composing, rather than relying entirely on exposure adjustments afterwards. The soft transition helps avoid a hard, obvious line across the frame, particularly when the horizon isn’t perfectly straight. This filter is best used when the brightness difference is modest; it gives you a measured adjustment, not a fix for every high-contrast scene.
Specialist Note
Is the 0.3 NDSEG a subtle adjustment? Yes: it reduces light by one stop, so it’s a gentle way to bring a bright sky closer to the foreground’s exposure. For example, a reading of 1/125 sec for the sky becomes about 1/60 sec with that reduction. The 165 x 200 mm format gives you room to position the graduated area where the brightness changes in your composition. I’d consider it for landscapes with a fairly even horizon and a sky that’s just a little too bright. If the scene has a much larger exposure difference, one stop may not be enough on its own.
