Formatt Hitech 85x110mm (3.35x4.33) NDSEG 0.9 (3stops)
Formatt Hitech 85x110mm (3.35x4.33) NDSEG 0.9 (3stops) | Three stops of light control
Bright conditions can leave you choosing between a shutter speed that’s too fast for the motion you want and an aperture you’d rather not change. This Formatt Hitech ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by three stops, giving you more room to make that exposure choice. Its 0.9 density corresponds to three stops, or one eighth of the light, so you can plan the adjustment rather than rely on guesswork. It’s a practical option for photographers who want to slow a shutter for moving water or motion in a scene, and for those who want to keep a chosen aperture in brighter light. The 85 x 110 mm rectangular format is useful to know when planning how the filter will be positioned in your setup. This is a set-strength filter, so the amount of light reduction stays at three stops.
Specialist Note
Is three stops enough to make a difference with this Formatt Hitech NDSEG 0.9? Yes, when you want a measured reduction rather than a much longer exposure. I’d suggest it to someone photographing moving water who wants to test a slower shutter: for example, an exposure of 1/30 sec becomes 1/4 sec with three stops less light, assuming the other exposure settings stay put. The 85 x 110 mm size gives you a rectangular filter to position as part of your setup, so take that format into account when planning your kit. Its limit is simple: three stops is the fixed reduction, so it won’t give you variable control over the strength.
