Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | 9-stop light reduction for longer exposures
Without an ND filter, bright light can push you towards a faster shutter or a smaller aperture when you want to show movement or keep a chosen aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.7 is a neutral-density filter that reduces exposure by nine stops, giving you room to use a much longer shutter speed in daylight. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants to soften moving water or clouds. It can also help you keep a wider aperture when the scene is too bright for your preferred exposure. The 46mm designation is the filter size, so it’s for lenses with a matching filter thread. This is a strong, fixed amount of light reduction; it’s best when you want a deliberately long exposure rather than a small exposure adjustment.
Specialist Note
For moving water, I’d meter the scene at 1/125 sec first, then use this nine-stop filter to bring the exposure to roughly 4 seconds at the same ISO and aperture. That’s a useful starting point for smoothing a stream or letting clouds shift across a landscape. The 46mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread, so it won’t suit every lens in a kit. Because it cuts so much light, I’d pair it with a tripod when you want those longer exposures to stay steady. If you need only a small exposure change, this strength may be more than you need.
