Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Gain two stops of exposure control
The ND 0.6 density is the defining choice here: it cuts the light reaching your camera by two stops, giving you a measured adjustment rather than a very strong reduction. That’s handy when you want a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without changing the light in the scene. The 58mm size gives you a clear measurement to match against a lens’s filter thread. This filter suits photographers who want to control exposure in bright conditions, especially when movement or depth of field matters to the picture. Use the two-stop reduction to soften the movement of a stream, or to open the aperture a little for a portrait in daylight. It’s a straightforward option when you know that two stops is enough for the look you’re after; it isn’t intended to create a very long exposure in strong daylight by itself.
What two stops changes
Two stops means letting through one quarter of the light that would reach the camera without the filter. As a simple exposure example, a shutter speed of 1/250 sec can become about 1/60 sec while keeping the same aperture and ISO. That extra time can make flowing water look smoother, while retaining a familiar exposure. The result still depends on the light and the movement in your scene.
Specialist Note
Photographers framing streams, fountains or moving clouds will get the most practical use from this two-stop filter. At ND 0.6, it gives you enough reduction to lengthen an exposure without pushing into the much darker range: for example, around 1/250 sec becomes roughly 1/60 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That can start to soften moving water while keeping detail in the rest of the scene. The 58mm size is useful when it matches the filter thread on your lens, so check that measurement against the lens you plan to use. One honest limit: two stops won’t make a very long daylight exposure on its own.
