Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Slow your shutter by four stops
In bright daylight, a moving stream can look frozen at a fast shutter speed; this Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter lets you slow that exposure down. It’s a 58mm filter with an ND 1.2 rating, equivalent to four stops of light reduction. That makes it useful when you want motion blur in water or clouds, or when you’d like to use a wider aperture in strong light without pushing the shutter speed too high. It suits photographers whose lens takes a 58mm filter and who want a moderate, clearly defined reduction in light rather than a very dense filter. Four stops gives you room to make a visible change to your exposure, while keeping the adjustment straightforward: meter your scene, fit the filter, then compensate by changing shutter speed, aperture or ISO. It’s a practical option for deliberate exposure control in daylight.
Specialist Note
The 58mm size makes this a straightforward match for a lens with a 58mm filter thread, so it’s worth checking the marking on the front of your lens before choosing it. I’d suggest it to someone exploring longer exposures outdoors: with the four-stop reduction, a metered 1/30 sec exposure can become 1/2 sec if you keep the other settings unchanged, giving moving water time to blur. It can also help you hold a wider aperture in bright conditions. One sensible limit: four stops may not be enough on its own for very long exposures in strong sun. A tripod is a good partner when you’re deliberately slowing the shutter.
