Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Create long exposures in daylight
Turn a bright daytime scene into a long exposure, with water and clouds rendered as soft movement. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed when the scene would otherwise be too bright. It’s for photographers who want to show motion in a landscape or make a busy scene feel calmer, rather than freeze every detail. The 58mm size is the key fit detail: choose it for a lens with a matching 58mm filter thread. A strong neutral-density reduction can make a noticeable difference to exposure, so take a fresh meter reading after fitting it and adjust from there. For a still landscape, that can mean moving from a fast shutter speed to a few seconds of exposure. It’s a straightforward way to explore motion blur without waiting for dimmer light.
What eight stops can do
Eight stops means the exposure time can be multiplied by 256 while keeping the same brightness, assuming the scene and other settings stay unchanged. For example, a starting exposure of 1/125 sec becomes about 2 sec with the filter in place. That gives flowing water time to blur and can soften movement in clouds. Use a stable camera position for this kind of long exposure, and expect moving subjects to blur too.
At a glance
- Strong light reduction for longer shutter speeds in bright conditions.
- Useful for showing movement in water, clouds or other changing parts of a scene.
Specialist Note
This filter makes a genuinely long exposure possible in daylight without having to wait for evening. Its eight-stop reduction gives you a clear starting point: if the unfiltered reading is 1/125 sec, try around 2 sec, then adjust to suit the scene. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers working with moving water or clouds, especially when they want that movement to read as a smooth blur. The 58mm size makes the filter choice specific to lenses with a 58mm filter thread, so match that number before planning a setup. It’s less suited to keeping moving subjects crisp; the longer exposure will blur them.
