Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds that are too fast for the blur you want, or force you to stop down when you’d rather keep your chosen aperture. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by 8 stops, giving you more room to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture. It’s especially suited to landscape photographers who want to soften moving water or show motion in clouds while keeping the rest of the scene sharp. The ND 2.4 strength makes a substantial difference, so it’s most useful when there’s plenty of light to work with. It can also help when you want a shallower depth of field in bright conditions. This is a fixed-strength filter, so it won’t give you a range of density settings; choose it when an 8-stop reduction suits the effect you have in mind.
Specialist Note
“Will this Firecrest ND 2.4 give me a proper long exposure in daylight?” Yes — its 8-stop reduction can turn a 1/125 sec exposure into about 2 seconds, with aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s a practical starting point for giving a stream or waterfall a softer appearance; take a test frame and adjust the shutter speed to taste. The 67mm size is for a lens with a matching 67mm filter thread, so it’s worth matching that number to the lens before choosing it. I’d recommend it to someone who has a specific long-exposure effect in mind. One limitation: in dim conditions, eight stops can leave you needing a very long exposure.
