Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Four stops for deliberate motion control
Its ND 1.2 density is the defining choice: it cuts four stops of light, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture in bright conditions. The 72mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread. This filter suits photographers who want to control how motion appears in a frame, from softening moving water to showing cloud movement with a longer exposure. It can also help you keep a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise call for a smaller one. The four-stop reduction is a clear, fixed amount, so you can plan around it rather than guess at the strength. It’s a focused tool for exposure control, not a variable-strength filter; choose it when four stops is the reduction you need.
Specialist Note
With the Firecrest ND 1.2 in place, four stops of light are taken off the exposure, so you can slow the shutter without waiting for the light to change. For moving water, try a starting exposure of 1/125 sec and compensate for the filter to reach roughly 1/8 sec; that gives the water time to blur while stationary details stay defined. The 72mm size matters at the point of setup: it fits a lens with a 72mm filter thread, so check that match before building your kit around it. I’d recommend it to someone who wants a straightforward, fixed reduction. The trade-off is just that four stops is the amount you get.
