Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Three stops of light reduction for longer exposures
Without a neutral-density filter, bright conditions can push you toward a faster shutter speed or a smaller aperture, even when you want motion blur or a shallower depth of field. This filter gives you a way to reduce the light reaching your camera and keep those creative choices open. It suits photographers who make deliberate exposure decisions: landscape photographers smoothing moving water, for example, or anyone looking to show gentle movement in a scene. Instead of relying on a very small aperture just to control brightness, you can choose a shutter speed for the movement you want. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture in bright light. The benefit is direct and practical: more freedom to set exposure for the look of the image, rather than brightness alone.
Specialist Note
A three-stop reduction won’t turn harsh midday light into darkness, so this isn’t the filter for extreme long exposures in full sun. Its measured ND 0.9 strength is still very handy when you want a visible change in shutter speed without going to an especially dense filter. For example, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes about 1/15 sec with three stops of reduction—enough to soften flowing water if you keep the camera steady. The 77mm size is the detail to match to your lens’s filter thread. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers and anyone wanting controlled motion blur, with a tripod for that slower-shutter work.
