Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Create extreme long exposures
Moving water can become a smooth veil, and clouds can drift into long streaks across the frame. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a very dense neutral density filter, reducing incoming light by 24 stops so you can use much longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers and other image-makers who want pronounced motion blur, or who need to keep a chosen aperture while working in strong light. The 58mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread. This is an unusually strong reduction, so it’s best for deliberate, carefully planned exposures rather than everyday light control. Think through your framing and exposure before you start: at this density, a shutter speed that sounds short can turn into a very long exposure.
Working with 24 stops
A 24-stop reduction multiplies the exposure time by 16,777,216 if you keep aperture and ISO unchanged. As a guide, a metered exposure of 1/8000 second would become roughly 35 minutes. Use an exposure calculator to work out your own starting point, and allow for the long wait when planning a shot. The result can be striking motion blur, but this level of density isn’t a subtle adjustment.
Specialist Note
A common first mistake with a filter this dense is treating it like a small exposure tweak; 24 stops changes the whole timing of a shot. I’d compose and focus first, then calculate the exposure before fitting it. For a river scene, for example, a 1/8000-second starting exposure at the same aperture and ISO works out to about 35 minutes, giving moving water time to soften into a continuous flow. The 7.2 density is what makes that extreme extension possible. The 58mm size suits a lens with a 58mm filter thread. It’s a specialist strength, though: composing and focusing with so little light reaching the camera can be awkward.
