Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Supermist Black 1/2
Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Supermist Black 1/2 | Softer highlights, gentler contrast
Bright points of light can look hard and clinical in a portrait or a carefully lit scene. The Formatt Hitech Glass Supermist Black 1/2 filter is made to give those highlights a softer, mist-like appearance and take the edge off contrast. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want that effect in camera, rather than adding it later in editing. The 1/2 version gives you a defined diffusion effect while keeping the image recognisable; it’s a considered option for scenes where you want atmosphere without an overwhelmingly hazy look. This is a square 100 x 100 mm filter, so it belongs in a workflow built around that format. Its glass construction makes it a physical optical filter, not a software preset: the effect is present as you compose and record. It’s best used when bright highlights are part of the picture and you want them to feel less sharp.
Specialist Note
Hard-looking highlights can draw attention away from a face or a carefully arranged scene; this filter gives you a way to soften that impression while shooting. The 1/2 strength is a good place to start if you want a visible mist effect without making the whole image feel heavily veiled. At 100 x 100 mm, it’s for people already working with square-format filters in that size, so it’s worth thinking about your existing setup before choosing it. I’d use it for portraits with bright practical lights in the frame, or for a lit interview where you want a gentler highlight character. Keep in mind that the effect is made optically, so it won’t be as easy to dial back later as an editing adjustment.
