Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Leica M-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Leica M-Mount | A considered lens for expressive portraits
Rather than changing focal lengths to reframe, a fixed prime asks you to compose with care. The Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II is a standard lens for Leica M, made for photographers who want a dedicated portrait option and are happy to focus by hand. Its strongest use is portraiture: take time with your subject, choose your framing, and make focus part of the process. Manual focus suits a measured approach, where you can adjust your position and refine the point of attention rather than relying on autofocus. It’s a thoughtful fit for portrait photographers who enjoy working deliberately, and for anyone who wants a lens with a clear role in their kit rather than one intended to cover every situation.
Portraits at your own pace
With a portrait lens, the way you direct and position your subject matters as much as the framing. Give yourself room to make small changes: shift your viewpoint, ask your subject to turn slightly, and keep the background simple so attention stays on the face. This lens suits that unhurried way of working. It’s less about changing settings constantly and more about choosing a composition, checking your focus, and making the frame feel intentional.
Specialist Note
Manual focus takes more attention, and a fixed 58mm view won’t give you the quick reframing of a zoom. That’s a fair trade if portraits are the point: the f/1.9 maximum aperture gives you the option to open up and make your subject the clear focus of the frame. For a head-and-shoulders portrait, try f/1.9 and take a moment to place focus carefully on the nearer eye. I’d recommend it to someone who enjoys shaping a portrait rather than taking a fast series of casual frames. It’s a distinctive, purposeful lens for that slower style of picture-making.
