PolarPro Quartzline ND1000/PL Filter 77 mm
PolarPro Quartzline ND1000/PL Filter 77 mm | Long exposures with polarising control
The Quartzline combines an ND1000 filter and a polariser in one 77 mm filter, giving you strong light reduction alongside control over reflections. It’s for photographers who want to use slow shutter speeds in daylight, or manage glare while keeping the scene’s exposure in check. The ND1000 reduces incoming light by a factor of 1,000—close to ten stops—so moving water can take on a smoother appearance and passing clouds can blur across a frame. The polarising function is useful when reflections on water or glass distract from the subject; its effect depends on the angle between the camera and the reflected light. This combination is particularly suited to landscape work and other carefully composed scenes where you have time to set up and focus before fitting a very dark filter. If your lens takes 77 mm filters, this is the size to look for. It’s a specialised tool for deliberate exposure choices, rather than a filter you’ll leave on for everyday shooting.
Specialist Note
A common early mistake with a very dark ND filter is trying to compose and focus through it; the ND1000 cuts so much light that it’s more practical to set your framing and focus first, then fit the filter. For a sense of the exposure change, a metered 1/125 second becomes about 8 seconds with the ND1000, making it useful for smoothing a stream or softening waves in daylight. The PL element also helps tame reflections on water or glass, though you’ll want to adjust your angle to control the effect. This suits patient landscape photographers especially well. One practical point: long exposures need a steady camera, and the polarising effect varies with your position.
