Rodenstock PLC Digital 82mm | Control reflections and enrich skies

Without a polarising filter, reflections on glass or water can compete with the subject, and bright skies may look pale in a photograph. The Rodenstock PLC Digital 82mm is a polarising filter for photographers who want more control over those effects in-camera, rather than relying on editing later. Turn the filter while looking through the viewfinder or at the screen to see how the reflections change, then settle on the effect that suits the scene. It’s particularly useful for photographing shop windows, water, or landscapes with a broad blue sky. The filter size is 82mm, so it’s intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. A polariser can also reduce the light reaching the camera, so it’s worth considering that when choosing your exposure. For outdoor work where glare is part of the problem, this gives you a direct way to adjust it as you compose.

Getting the effect you want

Reflections don’t disappear equally from every angle, so take a moment to turn the filter and watch the scene change. On glass, this can reveal more of what’s behind the reflection; near water, it can help bring the surface and what’s below it into a better balance. In a landscape, rotating the filter can deepen the appearance of the sky. The result depends on the light and your shooting angle, so use the viewfinder or screen to judge it rather than expecting the same effect in every frame.
