Rodenstock Variond Extended 72

Rodenstock Variond Extended 72 | Control light for creative exposures

Rodenstock Variond Extended 72 is a grey ND filter, made for photographers who want more control over how much light reaches the camera. It suits landscape and architectural photography, as well as scenes where you want to show movement with a longer shutter speed. An ND filter can also help you choose a wider aperture in bright conditions. The useful point is control: instead of letting the available light dictate every exposure choice, you can decide whether to keep movement crisp or let it register as a blur. This filter is best approached as a practical exposure tool, not as a way to change a scene’s colour or style by itself. The name identifies the product, while its grey ND classification tells you its role. With no density value to guide a precise exposure calculation, plan to judge the exposure through your camera rather than assume a particular shutter-speed change.

Using it for motion and depth of field

For moving water or clouds, use the ND filter to reduce the light reaching the camera, then select a longer shutter speed to record more movement. For portraits or detail shots in bright light, the same light reduction can give you room to choose a wider aperture. The result depends on the scene and your exposure settings, so check the image and adjust rather than expect a fixed change from one situation to another.
