Rodenstock Variond Extended 77
Rodenstock Variond Extended 77 | Create longer exposures in daylight
For soft, flowing water or a more deliberate blur in a bright scene, an ND filter cuts the light reaching the camera so you can use a longer shutter speed. The Rodenstock Variond Extended 77 is a grey neutral density filter for photographers who want that control when daylight would otherwise call for a faster exposure. It suits landscape work, moving water and other scenes where motion in the frame is part of the picture. The 77 mm designation makes it relevant to setups that use a 77 mm filter size. Because the filter reduces incoming light, it can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want a shallower depth of field. The effect you get depends on the exposure you choose: a longer shutter speed gives movement more time to register, while a wider aperture changes how much of the scene appears in focus.
Specialist Note
The grey filter surface is what changes the exposure: it holds back light before it reaches the lens, giving you room to choose a slower shutter speed in daylight. For a landscape with moving water, use a tripod and lengthen the exposure until the water takes on the amount of blur you want; the filter’s 77 mm size is the practical detail to match to your setup. It can also help keep a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want a softer background. One point to keep in mind: longer exposures make camera movement more visible, so steady support matters when blur is the aim.
