Rollei AF 85 mm f/1.8 FE Sony
Rollei AF 85 mm f/1.8 FE Sony | Portraits with soft background separation
For portraits with a clear subject and a softly blurred background, an 85 mm view gives you room to frame a head-and-shoulders shot without standing right beside your subject. The Rollei AF 85 mm f/1.8 FE Sony is a short telephoto prime for Sony FE cameras, with autofocus for portraits and event moments when you need to respond quickly. Its focal length suits individual portraits and candid details, while also giving you a natural working distance for photographing people. At events, that reach can help you frame a speaker or guest without crowding them. It’s a focused option for photographers who mainly want a portrait lens, rather than a zoom that covers many situations. In smaller rooms, the 85 mm framing can feel tight, so allow yourself some space to step back.
Specialist Note
The f/1.8 maximum aperture gives you room to work with a shallow depth of field, so try it for a portrait when you want the face to draw attention and the background to fall away. On a full-frame Sony FE camera, the 85 mm view is especially well suited to head-and-shoulders portraits. I’d also consider it for event photography: autofocus helps you respond to changing expressions, and the wide aperture can be useful when the available light is low. For a softer background, open to f/1.8 and focus carefully on the nearer eye. One practical limit: in a cramped venue, you may not have enough room to frame a group comfortably.
