Tiffen 44CGN9S 4x4 CLR/ND.9 Grad SE Filter
Tiffen 44CGN9S 4x4 CLR/ND.9 Grad SE Filter | Balance bright skies
A bright sky can pull attention away from the landscape below it, leaving you with a choice between washed-out highlights and a foreground that’s too dark. The Tiffen 44CGN9S is a graduated filter with a clear section and an ND 0.9 section, so you can reduce light in part of the frame while keeping the rest clear. Its soft-edge graduation creates a gradual transition between the two areas, making it useful when the brightness changes around a fairly level horizon. Landscape photographers can use it for scenes with a bright sky and darker land; it can also help balance a bright strip of sky above a city view. The key is placing the transition where the change in brightness occurs. This filter suits photographers who want to manage that contrast optically while composing, rather than relying on a large exposure difference between sky and foreground in a single frame.
Specialist Note
A graduated filter has a clear limit: it’s less suited to a scene where bright areas cut unpredictably across the frame. For a fairly even horizon, though, this Tiffen’s soft-edge transition gives you a more forgiving blend than a hard boundary. The 4x4 format is useful when your setup is built around that filter size, while the ND 0.9 section lets you hold back a brighter part of the view without darkening the clear area in the same way. I’d consider it for open landscapes at sunrise, positioning the transition along the horizon, or a skyline against a bright sky. It’s a focused tool for scenes with a clear division in brightness.
