Tiffen 44CGST1S 4x4 CLR/Straw 1 Grad SE Filter
Tiffen 44CGST1S 4x4 CLR/Straw 1 Grad SE Filter | Add warmth to part of the frame
A pale sky above a warm-toned landscape can leave the scene feeling cooler than it looked to you. The Tiffen 44CGST1S is a 4x4 graduated filter with a clear-to-straw effect, letting you add warmth selectively rather than across the whole frame. Its soft-edge graduation gives you a more gradual transition between the tinted and clear areas, which can be helpful when the boundary in your composition isn’t a perfectly straight horizon. It suits landscape photographers and filmmakers who want to shape colour in-camera with a physical filter. Use the straw area over a sky or another part of the scene you want to warm, and keep the clear area over the rest. The “1 Grad” designation is part of the product name; the title doesn’t specify a density scale, so I wouldn’t use it to predict an exact exposure change. This is a focused colour effect, not a neutral graduated filter.
Specialist Note
The square 4x4 format gives you room to position the graduation precisely: slide the transition up or down to suit the line between sky and land. I’d consider it for a landscape with a cool-looking sky, or for warming one section of a composed shot while leaving the rest clear. The straw tint is the key here, and the soft edge helps make that colour shift less abrupt across the frame. Take a moment to line the graduation up with the scene before recording. One honest point: because the effect is straw-coloured, it’s for adding warmth, not for keeping every area colour-neutral.
