Tiffen 45650BPM14 4x5.650 Black Pro-Mist 1/4
Tiffen 45650BPM14 4x5.650 Black Pro-Mist 1/4 | Softens highlights with a subtle glow
The 4 × 5.65 format is the defining choice here: it gives this filter a broad rectangular form for use in a cinema-style filtration setup. Tiffen’s Black Pro-Mist look is designed to soften the rendering of bright points and ease contrast, giving highlights a gentle bloom rather than leaving them crisply defined. At 1/4 strength, the effect is present but restrained, so it can add atmosphere without taking over every frame. It suits filmmakers and image-makers who want a softer, more luminous look, especially for faces, practical lights and night scenes. It’s also a considered choice for a commercial or music-video setup where the lighting is part of the image. This isn’t a neutral filter: the glow is an aesthetic decision, and the result depends on what’s bright in the frame. Use it when you want that character, not as an invisible correction.
Specialist Note
At blue hour, a bright shop window can turn into part of the portrait rather than just a hard patch of light. That’s where the Black Pro-Mist 1/4 earns its place: keep a practical light near your subject in the composition and its highlights soften into a gentle glow. I’d suggest it to filmmakers and portrait makers who want a little atmosphere but still want the scene to feel recognisable. The quarter-strength designation points to a measured effect, not a heavy diffusion look. One thing to bear in mind: if you want crisp, clean highlights, this filter is working against that preference.
