Tiffen 6666SNB1 6.6x6.6 Softnet Black 1 Filter
Tiffen 6666SNB1 6.6x6.6 Softnet Black 1 Filter | A softer, gentler image
Hard, clinical detail can make a scene feel less flattering than it looked in front of the camera. The Tiffen 6666SNB1 Softnet Black 1 is a square filter designed to soften the image, giving crisp detail a gentler character while keeping the scene recognisable. It suits camera operators and photographers who want to shape the look in-camera rather than rely on softening in post-production, particularly for portraits and close views where fine detail can feel stark. The “Black 1” designation identifies this version of Tiffen’s Softnet filter; it’s a specific creative effect, not a general-purpose protective filter. Its 6.6 x 6.6-inch format is intended for a matching square-filter setup, so it’s best considered as part of a planned filtration arrangement. Choose it when you want a deliberately softer rendering, not when the aim is maximum crispness.
What to expect from the Softnet look
Think of this filter as a way to take the edge off an image, rather than make the whole frame look out of focus. That distinction makes it useful when you want a softer visual impression but still need the subject to read clearly. The effect is a creative choice: if you prefer every fine detail to appear sharp, this isn’t the filter to reach for.
Specialist Note
This filter has a specific look, so I wouldn’t suggest it for every scene; it’s the right buy when you want softness to be part of the image from the start. The 6.6 x 6.6-inch size means you’ll need to plan around that square format, rather than treat it like a small everyday filter. And the Softnet Black 1 name is the detail to focus on: it points to a softening effect, not a neutral change to the scene. I’d consider it for a portrait or a close-up when hard detail feels too pronounced. If your priority is maximum sharpness throughout, choose a different filter.
