Tokina 112mm Pro IRND 1.5
Tokina 112mm Pro IRND 1.5 | Five stops of light control
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a faster shutter and a smaller aperture. The Tokina 112mm Pro IRND 1.5 is a neutral-density filter for photographers and filmmakers who want more control over exposure in strong light. Its 1.5 density gives five stops of light reduction, useful for extending shutter times or keeping a wider aperture when the scene is bright. The IRND designation also addresses infrared light, which can affect colour when using dense filtration. That makes this a considered option for video work and other situations where consistent colour matters alongside exposure control. It’s best suited to a setup that already takes 112mm filters and to people who have a clear reason to slow exposure or hold their chosen aperture. It’s a specialist size, so it makes most sense as part of a planned filter kit.
Exposure planning
Think about the exposure you want before fitting the filter. A five-stop reduction lets you use a much longer shutter time in the same light, or keep a wider aperture without raising the shutter speed. For moving water, that can help soften motion; for video, it can help retain a chosen shutter and aperture in bright conditions. The filter changes exposure, not the scene’s movement, so the result still depends on how your subject behaves during the longer exposure.
Specialist Note
At 1/30 sec, a five-stop reduction brings the exposure to about one second, which is a useful starting point for softening moving water in daylight. The 1.5 density gives you that five-stop change, so you can plan the shutter time rather than relying on a guess. I’d point this Tokina towards photographers and video makers who already work with a 112mm filter setup and need deliberate control in bright light. The 112mm size means it’s tied to that filter format, so it’s less flexible as an occasional spare. For long exposures, use a stable support and keep an eye on anything in the frame that moves.
