Tokina 86mm Pro IRND 2.4 | Cut light for longer exposures

In bright daylight, you may want a longer shutter speed to soften moving water or passing clouds, but the available light can make that difficult. An ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to choose a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture. The Tokina 86mm Pro IRND 2.4 is an ND filter for photographers who need this kind of control and are looking for the 86mm size. It’s particularly relevant for deliberate exposure choices in scenes that would otherwise be too bright for the effect you want. The name identifies it as an IRND filter with a 2.4 designation; it doesn’t, by itself, tell you the exposure change in stops. If your work calls for a specific shutter speed, plan to check exposure after fitting the filter rather than relying on an assumed conversion.

Specialist Note

The 86mm size is the practical detail to start with: it makes this filter a fit to consider for a lens setup that uses 86mm filters, rather than a general-purpose size for every lens. I’d look at the filter size your lens takes before building it into a kit. The 2.4 designation is useful to keep in mind when planning a long exposure, but I wouldn’t translate it into a shutter-speed change without a confirmed conversion. For softening moving water in daylight, compose your frame, fit the filter and adjust the exposure for the slower shutter you want. It suits photographers who already know they need this size and a stronger light-reducing filter; the exact exposure result depends on the scene and settings.
