Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (E)
Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (E) | A short-telephoto prime for cinematic work
The defining choice is an 85mm short-telephoto focal length: it gives filmmakers a tighter view of a subject, useful when a scene calls for an intimate portrait or dialogue shot. This is an interchangeable cinema prime for video and filmmaking, with a T1.5 maximum aperture. That bright aperture gives you room to work in dimmer settings and to draw attention to a subject with shallow depth of field. It’s a lens for filmmakers who prefer to set focus themselves and shape each shot with intention, rather than rely on autofocus. The 85mm view can make a subject feel distinct from its surroundings, but it needs a little space; it’s less suited to cramped interiors or wide establishing shots. Choose it when the frame should stay close to a face, a detail or a moment within a scene. The E designation is part of the product name; the key creative tools here are its short-telephoto view and fast aperture.
Specialist Note
On a softly lit interior set, a face holds the frame while the rest of the room recedes. That’s where I’d consider this Tokina: T1.5 gives you room to work when the light is low, and it can help keep attention on your subject. For a quiet dialogue close-up, I’d open to T1.5 and turn focus manually as the actor leans or shifts; that deliberate control suits a considered scene. It’s a good fit for filmmakers who want to shape focus themselves. One practical limit: an 85mm view needs working distance, so allow room around the camera, especially in a small location.
