Urth 77mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 77mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Adds a soft, atmospheric look
Without a diffusion filter, highlights keep their usual crisp edges. The Urth 77mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+ is for photographers who want a softer, more atmospheric rendering in camera, rather than adding that character later in editing. Its Black Mist name points to the look it’s intended to create: a gentle bloom around bright areas and a less clinical feel to a scene. That can suit portraits, evening street scenes and photographs with small light sources in frame. The 77mm size makes it relevant to lenses that take a 77mm filter; it isn’t a universal fit, so match the filter size to the marking on your lens. This is an effect filter, not a neutral protective layer: its purpose is to change the image’s rendering. Choose it when that change is part of the picture you want, rather than when you need a completely untouched look.
Specialist Note
For a 77mm lens at dusk, I’d use this when a portrait has bright shop windows or streetlights behind the subject. The 77mm marking is the filter size, so match it to the size printed on your lens; that’s the practical detail to settle before choosing it. Black Mist describes the atmospheric treatment, so those bright points can take on a softer presence instead of looking sharply cut out. I’d suit it to photographers who want that deliberate mood in portraits or night scenes. One honest caveat: it changes the image rather than staying invisible, so I wouldn’t reach for it when crisp, neutral rendering is the priority.
