Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 Nikon Z

Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 Nikon Z - a bright f/1.2 standard prime

The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 Nikon Z pairs a versatile 35mm view with a maximum aperture of f/1.2, giving this standard prime a distinctive advantage when the light fades. It’s an autofocus lens for Nikon Z photographers who shoot street scenes and travel, and who want the option of a soft, out-of-focus background as well as a bright view through the lens. On a late city walk, the wide aperture is useful for working in available light; during the day, 35mm is a natural focal length for catching street details without narrowing the scene too much. It also works well for travel photographs where you want a clear sense of place, from a lively square to a quiet café interior. The optical design uses 15 elements in 10 groups, including ED, HR and UA glass, to reduce chromatic aberration and retain contrast and colour. Autofocus is driven by Viltrox’s Quad HyperVCM motor, with face and eye tracking support for stills and video. A dual floating focus system maintains sharpness across the focus range, while the close-focus distance of 34cm lets you bring a nearby detail into the frame. It’s a substantial set of capabilities in a single fixed-focal-length lens.

Why this focal length works

• 35mm standard prime: The 64.2° angle of view gives street and travel scenes room for their surroundings while keeping a clear subject in the frame. It’s a useful perspective for moving between wider views and smaller details without changing lenses.
• Eleven aperture blades: The rounded opening contributes to the smooth bokeh associated with this lens. Use a wide aperture to separate a nearby subject from a busier street or travel background.
• Dual floating internal focus: The focusing system is arranged to maintain sharpness across the lens’s focus range. That matters when moving between a detail close by and a subject farther down the street.
• 15 elements in 10 groups: ED, HR and UA elements are included in the optical design to reduce chromatic aberration. The design also supports contrast and colour in scenes with fine detail.
• Quad Viltrox HyperVCM autofocus: The motor is specified for fast, quiet focusing, with face and eye tracking support. That’s useful for candid portraits within a street scene, as well as video where focus noise can be distracting.
• Controls for quick adjustments: A multifunctional ring, two customisable Fn buttons and a click or clickless aperture ring provide ways to adjust the lens to your shooting preferences. The LCD displays settings including aperture and focus distance.
• Weather-conscious construction: The metal body has dust and moisture resistance for outdoor use. A 77mm filter thread also gives you the option to fit a compatible filter.

On your camera

This version has a Nikon Z mount and autofocus, and is intended for Nikon Z camera bodies that accept Z-mount lenses. Focus can also be set manually, so you can choose between autofocus and direct focus control. The lens’s 35mm focal length is the stated focal length; the field of view you see depends on the camera body you use. Its fixed focal length keeps the framing consistent, while the bright maximum aperture gives you a wide range of aperture settings to work with.
