Westcott 55-DEGREE Wide Umbrella Reflector w/ Honeycomb Grids (Bowens Mount)

Westcott 55-DEGREE Wide Umbrella Reflector w/ Honeycomb Grids (Bowens Mount) | Shape studio light with more control

More directed light gives you a cleaner way to shape a portrait or product setup. The Westcott 55-degree wide umbrella reflector combines an umbrella-style reflector with honeycomb grids, giving studio photographers a way to work with reflected light and keep its spread more considered. It’s suited to photographers who want to shape a light source on set rather than rely on broad, unmodified illumination. The 55-degree designation is part of the product name, and the mount is Bowens. In practice, this kind of modifier makes sense when you’re building a deliberate lighting arrangement and want a reflector that can be used with its grids. The honest trade-off is that a shaped source calls for more attention to placement than a bare light: small changes to its position can alter how the scene is lit. For portrait and product work, that hands-on control is the point.

Working with a shaped source

Start by placing the light where you want its effect to fall, then assess the subject and the surrounding area in your frame. If the light is reaching parts of the scene you’d rather keep quieter, the grids give you another way to manage where it goes. Move the reflector a little at a time and watch what changes; a small adjustment can be easier to judge than shifting several lights at once. This approach suits a tidy studio setup, where you can take a moment to refine the lighting before the session gets going. It also gives you a straightforward way to experiment: compare the look with the grids in use against the look you get without relying on them. The product’s name gives you the key details to identify it for your setup, without implying a particular look will suit every subject or room.
