It’s suited to street photography and travel, where you may want to frame a passer-by, a storefront or a detail without carrying a long lens. Focusing is manual, so you set focus yourself rather than relying on autofocus; that suits photographers who enjoy taking a more deliberate approach. The f/1.4 maximum aperture gives you room to work with available light and to soften the background when you want your subject to draw the eye. Its standard-prime view is a natural fit for everyday scenes, though it won’t give you the expansive framing of a wide-angle lens.

Specialist Note

The focus ring puts you in charge of the final point of focus, which makes this lens a considered rather than hurried tool. For a street portrait or a travel detail, I’d open it to f/1.4 when light is fading; that wide aperture gives you more light to work with and can help separate the subject from what’s behind it.
