B+W 102 ND Gray 77 E | Make longer exposures in bright light

Without an ND filter, bright conditions can force you to use a faster shutter speed than you want. The B+W 102 ND Gray 77 E is a neutral-density filter for photographers who want more control over exposure, especially when they want movement to show in a scene. That makes it relevant for smoothing the look of flowing water or adding motion blur to moving clouds, while keeping the aperture they’ve chosen. It’s also useful when you want to work with a wider aperture in bright light. The 77 E designation identifies the filter size, so match it to the thread size on your lens. This is a straightforward tool for shaping exposure; the result still depends on your settings and the available light.

Using an ND filter

Choose the aperture that gives you the depth of field you want, then use a slower shutter speed to show movement. For flowing water, support the camera securely so the water moves through the frame while the rest of the scene stays sharp. For clouds, a longer exposure can make their movement visible. Meter the scene after fitting the filter and adjust exposure to suit the light. The filter gives you more room to make that choice, but it doesn’t decide the look for you.

Specialist Note

Can the B+W 102 ND Gray 77 E help me use a slower shutter speed in daylight? Yes—that’s the practical point of its ND Gray designation: it lets less light reach the camera, giving you more scope to lengthen exposure. For moving water, choose the aperture you want, slow the shutter until the flow softens, and keep the camera steady. The 77 E marking is the size cue; match it to a 77 mm filter thread on your lens. I’d suggest this to someone who wants to work deliberately with motion rather than rely on a very small aperture. It won’t suit every lens directly, so the thread size matters.
