B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter 25% F-PRO - 77mm
B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter 25% F-PRO - 77mm | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
A bright sky above a darker landscape can leave you choosing between washed-out clouds and lost detail on the ground. The B+W 502 ND Gradient Filter is made for that kind of uneven light: its graduated neutral-density area lets you reduce brightness across part of the frame while leaving the rest less affected. This 77mm filter is for photographers whose lens setup takes that filter size, especially landscape shooters working with a clear division between sky and land. The 25% designation identifies this version; it’s best to judge the result in the scene rather than assume a particular stop reduction from the number alone. Use it when you want to balance a bright horizon in-camera, instead of relying on editing to recover an overly bright sky. It won’t help as much when bright areas are scattered across the frame rather than grouped along one edge.
Specialist Note
The 25% marking is worth noticing before you head out: it identifies the filter, but doesn’t tell you a stop value to dial into your exposure. The graduated ND format is the key practical detail. For a landscape with bright sky over darker ground, position the darker part across the sky boundary, then adjust your framing so that boundary sits naturally in the image. That makes this a good fit for deliberate compositions with a fairly clear horizon. The F-PRO designation is part of this specific B+W filter’s name; I’d choose it for the graduated effect, not expect it to correct bright patches scattered through a scene. That limitation is simply part of using a gradient.
