This B+W step-down ring connects the two sizes, so you can use a filter you already own instead of buying another in the larger size. Screw the ring onto the lens, then attach the smaller filter. It’s a straightforward fix for photographers who have built up a set of filters in one size and want to use one on a lens with a wider thread. It can also help keep a smaller filter in your kit for occasional use across different lenses. The ring doesn’t change what the filter does; it simply provides the size transition between lens and filter. Because the filter is smaller than the lens thread, check your image edges when using a wide-angle lens, where corner shading can be more noticeable.
Specialist Note
67 mm is the lens-side size here; in practice, that lets you fit a 49 mm filter to a lens with the wider thread. I’d consider it if you already own a 49 mm polariser and want to use it to reduce reflections on water: fit the ring and filter, then rotate the polariser while watching the reflections change. The black finish keeps the adapter visually quiet around the lens, though its colour has no effect on the picture. One point to bear in mind: a smaller filter can show as darkening in the corners with some wide-angle lenses. If that happens, a filter in the lens’s own thread size is the better match.
