Formatt Hitech 100x150mm (4x6) ND Grad Soft Edge 1.2 (4st)
Formatt Hitech 100x150mm (4x6) ND Grad Soft Edge 1.2 (4st) | Balance bright skies and darker ground
The 100 x 150 mm format gives this graduated filter room for you to position its soft transition across the frame, rather than placing the boundary at a fixed point. Formatt Hitech made it as a soft-edge neutral-density grad: it darkens one part of the scene while leaving the rest less affected. That’s useful when a bright sky and a darker foreground would otherwise be difficult to hold together in one exposure. Its 1.2 density is a four-stop reduction, so it’s intended for a pronounced difference in brightness, not just a subtle trim to the sky. This filter suits landscape photographers, coastal scenes and other compositions where the horizon or a similar tonal boundary can be aligned with the gradient. The soft edge makes the change in density less abrupt than a hard transition, which can be helpful when the boundary isn’t perfectly straight or falls around distant features. It gives you a practical way to balance exposure at capture, while still letting you choose where the darker area sits in the composition.
Specialist Note
Photographers framing bright cloud above a darker landscape are the people I’d point towards this four-stop soft grad. The 1.2 density makes a strong difference: if your meter calls for 1/125 sec, the four-stop reduction corresponds to about 1/8 sec in the filtered area, so take care to keep the camera steady. The 100 x 150 mm size gives you room to move the transition up or down until it sits across the sky and land in a way that suits the scene. It’s especially handy when you want to retain detail in a bright sky without making the foreground exposure the whole compromise. One caveat: a four-stop grad can look heavy when the brightness gap is modest, so it’s best matched to strongly contrasting scenes.
